What are servicers?
Student loans, especially when in re-payment, are often sold to companies. For example, your Direct Loan may have been sold to MOHELA, a servicer. Once the loan is sold, the servicer becomes responsible for:
- collecting payments
- customer service
- etc.
If your loan is sold to another company when you’re still in school then the servicer is responsible for:
- loan distribution
- collecting payments
- customer service
- complying with federal regulations
- etc.
