It’s not uncommon for people to call and ask a very basic question: How do I figure out how much debt I’m in?

The National Student Loan Data System makes it easy for federal loan borrowers. You’ll need:

  • Your social security number
  • The first two letters of your last name
  • Date of birth
  • and PIN# (Note: If you can’t remember your PIN# go to: http://www.pin.ed.gov/ to request a duplicate).

This site will tell you:

  • Type of Loan
  • Loan Amount
  • Loan Date
  • Disbursed Amount
  • Canceled Amount
  • Outstanding Principal
  • and Outstanding Interest

Remember private student loans will not be included.
