Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Legislation

It is estimated that student loan debt now surpasses $1 trillion.The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau reports that approximately $150 billion of outstanding student loan debt is in private loans.  Several years ago, Congress choose to do away with allowing private student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy.   I urge you to ask them to reconsider by supporting Senate and House bills, S. 114, the “Fairness for Struggling Students Act of 2013”, and H.R.532, the ‘‘Private Student Loan Bankruptcy Fairness Act of 2013’’.   We know the student loan debt problem will only get worse.  Ask your elected officials in Washington to support legislation that will restore bankruptcy protection for private student loans.
